The Earth Speaks

You are causing me deep pain

Have Injured me, exploited me

I have given since all eternity

All you ever needed you received from me.

I have provided light, water, sustenance

For a long time you maintained a balance

You cared for land and its cultivation

You took charge of my contributions

However, during the last century

What lies asleep in me

Has become Satan’s booty

Satan has taken control of you

Does he believe that I am his too

You drill for oil in a thousand locations

Pollute oceans, rivers and other places

Encircle me by day, by night, without end

Do you feel pride in your achievements

You are destroying precious habitation

You drive plants and animals to extinction

Those who warn, may meet with mockery

You are arrogant and greedy

Your disrespect is ruining me

Now is the time to send you signals

Which will hurt you, as well as me

The world will be in chaos,

I will move mountains, erupt volcanos

I will send tsunamis, flood the lands

I will bring heat and cold, rain and storms

And lightning, you have never known

No structures will be safe, they will come down

I beg you, stop your disastrous course

A warning: it can become much worse

Listen, Mankind, to what Earth tells you

You need her - she does not need you!

The Collingwood Climate Action Team is based on the traditional territory of the Haundenosaunee and Anishinabek peoples and, specifically, unceded Saugeen Ojibway territory. Our ancestors established a treaty relationship and responsibility with the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation and Saugeen First Nation, collectively the Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON) - which we strive to uphold today. We are thankful for the opportunity to benefit from the continuing protection and stewardship of the land, air and waters by Indigenous Peoples who have protected them for thousands of years. This area we now call home is also home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples with whom we wish to work together towards truth and reconciliation.
